Batgirl is one of the many DC Extended Universe movies currently in development, and Warner Bros is reportedly interested in releasing it soon after Wonder Woman 2. However, yesterday it was announced that Joss Whedon is no longer attached to write and direct Batgirl due to being unable to crack the story after a year. With Whedon gone, that now leaves open spots for new talent to tackle Batgirl, and one person who's offered to lend her services is author Roxane Gay, who's previously written for Marvel. And luckily for Gay, it sounds like DC is interested in potentially working with her.
Shortly after the news of Joss Whedon's departure from Batgirl broke, Roxane Gay tweeted out to DC Comics that she could write the movie, "no prob." Gay then received this message from Michele Wells, the vice-president of DC Entertainment.
Roxane Gay writing credits include the essay collection Bad Feminist, the novel An Untamed State and her memoir Hunger, but in the realm of comic books, she hit the scene when she was tapped to co-write the Black Panther spinoff series World of Wakanda with poet Yona Harvey. Despite earning praise, World of Wakanda (which starred former Dora Milaje members Ayo and Aneka) was cancelled after just six issues, and ironically, the cancellation confirmation came two days after the first trailer for the Black Panther movie dropped. In any case, besides being an acclaimed author, Gay also has some comic book experience on her resume, so it would be interesting to see what her vision for a Batgirl movie looks like. While there's no guarantee that she'll be the one who ends up adapting Barbara Gordon for the DCEU, if conversations between Warner Bros and DC do happen, one would imagine she stands a better chance of obtaining the job than most.
Although it was first rumored that Joss Whedon's Batgirl movie would use Gail Simone's run on the New 52 Batgirl comic book as a "starting point," yesterday it was reported that the man behind the Buffy the Vampire Slayer TV series and Firefly was actually interested in basing the movie off the 1967 story The Million Dollar Debut of Batgirl! But with Whedon gone, that brings Batgirl back to square one, leaving a new writer, be it Roxane Gay or someone else, to put their own spin on the character. Warner Bros is also reportedly interested in hiring more female directors for its movies, particularly ones centered on female characters, so no doubt Batgirl will be a big part of this initiative.
