DC's live-action universe has had a fascinating run in theaters, full of both peaks and valleys. And while there were some missteps with projects like Justice League and Suicide Squad, the future appears to be bright within the franchise, especially after the massive success of James Wan's Aquaman. There are a handful of exciting projects coming down the pipe, including Cathy Yan's Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn).
Birds of Prey will mark the first time Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn has appeared onscreen since David Ayer's Suicide Squad, and the fans are eager to get another glimpse into her complicated, crazy psyche. Production has begun on the upcoming ensemble film, with some photos from the set making their way to the internet. And shots of Harley's tattoos are causing endless fan theories.
For instance, there is one heart tattoo on Harley's left thigh, with the letters "P+H" in a heart. Some DC fans are hoping this might tease the appearance of Poison Ivy, and the romance between the two women from the comics. While Ivy isn't one of the announced characters to appear in Birds of Prey, Harley has a handful of other appearances planned for Warner Bros's shared universe. So Ivy's seems like only a matter of time.
Another option is that the P stands for Puddin', Harley's nickname for The Joker. Birds of Prey's long subtitle seems to tease the character's liberation from her psychotic and often abusive boyfriend, so the P could very well stand for Jared Leto's DC villain.
The theory that P+H actually indicates The Joker is backed up by another bit of ink spotted on Margot Robbie's signature DC character. Her right thigh includes the words "Harley + Puddin". But the word Puddin has a line through it, likely teasing Harley's breakup from Mr. J. Since the character is typically defined by her relationship, this will give Cathy Yan the opportunity to take Ms. Quinzel to new and exciting places.
What is clear from the internet's reaction to Harley's Birds of Prey ink shows that the upcoming blockbuster has a ton of buzz around it. While the film's main narrative is still a mystery, Cathy Yan has assembled an impressive cast to collide with Margot Robbie's Harley. While the movie won't arrive for another year and change, a teaser video recently revealed how characters like Black Mask, Huntress, and Black Canary will appear in live-action.
Birds of Prey (and The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) will bring more women into the shared universe, as the cast will primarily star a group of femme fatales. Gotham City's characters will be of particular relevance, including Huntress, Renee Montoya, Black Mask, Harley, and Victor Zsasz.
You can catch Birds of Prey in theaters on February 7th 2020. In the meantime, check out our 2019 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.
