More than 10 years after Venom made his big screen debut in Spider-Man 3, the character is getting a second shot at cinematic glory in his own movie. A few months back, the first Venom trailer dropped, and while we saw quite a bit of Eddie Brock, the preview was lacking in footage of his symbiotic half. Well, the newest Venom trailer has dropped, and thankfully, we finally get our first look at what this version of the symbiote-powered anti-hero looks like.
Although this version of Venom doesn't have any close ties to Spider-Man, like his comic book counterpart, the latest Venom preview lays out that Tom Hardy's Eddie Brock is a journalist who wants to find the truth. His target at the start of the movie is The Life Foundation, the mysterious corporation led by Riz Ahmed's Carlton Drake that's obtained the symbiotes. Already suspicious of what The Life Foundation is up to, Eddie receives a tipoff from Jenny Slate about the corporation's experiments with bonding the symbiotes with humans, but while investigating, Eddie gets "infected" by one of these beings, and thus Venom is born.
Not only does the new cinematic Venom have the black tendril thing going on, but the symbiote itself also communicates directly to Eddie Brock, and I have to say, the alien's voice is super unsettling. The trailer's money shot, however, is at the very end, when Eddie fully transforms into Venom and sticks out that long tongue before presumably eating or dismembering that criminal. In the comics, Venom varies between being an outright super villain and an anti-hero, and in this movie, it looks like Eddie will try his hardest to ensure that the symbiote only harms bad people, which is great when it comes to keeping the innocent safe. But if you're an antagonist who ends up in Venom's grip, then God help you.
It's a shame we won't see Venom clashing with Spider-Man in this movie, but as was previously hinted at when director Ruben Fleischer said that the Venom movie was inspired by the Lethal Protector and Planet of the Symbiotes storylines, I suspect Venom will eventually fight other symbiote-powered individuals who are sicced on him by The Life Foundation. So while this trailer only shows Venom dealing with normal human opponents, there's a good chance there'll be other abominations like him running around (whether or not that will include Carnage remains to be seen).
Along with this new Venom trailer, Sony Pictures also dropped a new poster showing us the two halves of the eponymous protagonist.
