Our last visit to the DC Extended Universe was in Justice League, which received mixed reviews and ultimately failed to impress at the box office. But now the superhero franchise is entering a new era, which is being kicked off by Aquaman, featuring Jason Momoa reprising Arthur Curry. Back in August, it was rumored that Aquaman test screenings were being met with positive reception. But now, with a month to go until it hits theaters, critics are giving their social media reactions to Aquaman, and it looks like the DCEU has a hit on its hands.
First up, CinemaBlend's own Sean O'Connell was most enthusiastic delivering his praise for Aquaman, noting that this is a movie that needs to be experienced through the silver screen.
CinemaBlend's own Eric Eisenberg was also a big fan of Aquaman, highlighting its action and Jason Momoa's performance.
io9's Germain Lussier stated that while there are parts of Aquaman that don't work, overall it's an enjoyable movie.
Brandon Davis from Comicbook.com said that Aquaman achieves a good balance of realism and the fantastical.
Slashfilm's Peter Sciretta commented that while Aquaman feels like an early entry from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, that's not a bad thing. He also mentioned in a follow-up tweet that many elements of the movie he didn't like have more to do with decisions Zack Snyder made that director James Wan inherited.
Finally, Terri Schwartz from IGN simply homed in on one of Aquaman's more surprising casting choices to summarize her feelings about the movie.
These are just some of the many reactions about Aquaman trickling in on Twitter now, so feel free to scour around if you're interested in other opinions. Still, for those who've been wondering about if Aquaman will be worth checking out, let alone in a theatrical setting, it seems that the answer is a resounding 'Yes!' Not only will that help towards putting butts in seats, but it also ideally gives the DCEU a more solid critical footing.
Set after the events of Justice League, Aquaman follows Arthur Curry reluctantly taking the Atlantean throne, only to find himself caught in a war between Atlantis and the surface world, as the former is sick of the latter polluting the oceans. The cast also includes Amber Heard as Mera, Patrick Wilson as Orm, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Black Manta, Willem Dafoe as Vulko, Dolph Lundgren as Nereus, Nicole Kidman as Atlanna and Temuera Morrison as Thomas Curry.
